"The 'Discussion at the Bistro' event was a tremendous opportunity for me to engage with many influential and interested community leaders in Toronto on a variety of correctional and criminal justice issues. The session was an excellent occasion for me - alongside one of Canada's most renowned leaders, Edward Greenspan - to have a thought-provoking conversation and to share with a very engaging audience. A huge thanks to Jon Dwyer and his colleagues for organizing this event, and to the proprietors of Bistro 990 for providing an exceptional meal and absolutely wonderful setting for this meaningful and fruitful exchange." - CSC Commissionser Mr. Don Head

"Jon runs a great salon, delightful conversation and superb food. I was very happy to be part of it." -The Hon. David R. Peterson, PC, QC

The Discussions @ the Bistro is a series of intimate evenings featuring a wide variety of Canadian politicos, authors, social entrepreneurs, media personalities, scholars, and intellectuals. The sessions were developed to create a forum for discussion to meet the growing demand for greater social discourse regarding issues affecting Canadians.

Guests of the Discussions @ the Bistro will be treated to French cuisine in 3-courses paired with Ontario VQA wines. Proceeds from each event will be donated to a charity of the speaker's choice.

Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke, joined us for our first Discussions @ the Bistro lunch on August 25th. Drawing on his nearly 20 years experience as a GM in the NHL, Mr. Burke discussed the evolution of the GM's role with respect to evolving trends, player injuries, the life of a GM in high pressure markets such as Toronto, and of course his plans for our pride and joy, the Toronto Maple Leafs. The lunch, the second event in our Toronto Athletics series, was a wild success.

January 17th was the successful first evening of 2011. Mr. Edward Greenspan and Mr. Don Head, Commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada, discussed the Canadian penal system and some of the challenges the Correctional Service of Canada faces. The lively evening came from Mr. Head's reflection on the evolution of the Canadian correctional service through his 33 years of experience, discussion ofthe current rehabilitative model and the CSC's plans for the future. Mr. Greenspan, perhaps Canada's most noted litigator, drew on nearly 40 years of legal experience to examine the functionality of the current penal system, discussing whether or not prisons work to rehabilitate Canadians and reintegrate them into society. Topics included; ‘What is the role of our correctional service?’ and ‘How are we rehabilitating Canadians in jail?’

The evening with Seamus O'Regan, co-host of CTV's Canada AM, and Michael Levine, producer, founding director of The Canadian Film Centre and foremost entertainment lawyer & agent has been postponed due to scheduling conflicts. The evening will be rescheduled for a future date.

On July 22nd the Hon David Peterson, former Premier of Ontario, and Roger Garland, Chair of the 2015 Toronto Pan/Parapan American games, spoke as part of the Discussions @ the Bistro's Summer series. The evening focused on how Toronto won the bid for the games and how the city will prepare for 42 nations, 10,000 athletes and 100,000 spectators.
This evening was the first in our Toronto Athletics series.

The Summer Discussion Series began with Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair and former Cabinet Minister and Chair of the Canadian Intelligence Review Commission, Professor Ron Atkey on May 27th, 2010. Our speakers addressed the threats Toronto will face in the coming years, focusing specifically on security issues as the Toronto G20 approached. Chief Blair addressed the challenges the Toronto Police Service, as a municipal law enforcement agency, must address, while Professor Atkey spoke about the role of CSIS and other federal agencies.

The Discussions @ the Bistro's first series, entitled the ‘Changing Toronto Forum’ (February 22-April 20), featured George Smitherman, Rocco Rossi and John Tory. Each speaker addressed guests at the Bistro discussing their visions for the future of Toronto. The series will continue over the summer.
