About George Smitherman

George has been a lifelong resident of the City of Toronto and has been active in our community for many years.   He has already contributed greatly to our city and is ready to do more. Throughout his adult life -- in public office and as a private citizen -- George has been a passionate advocate for a better Toronto, working for positive change in many areas including housing, human rights, heritage preservation, community economic development, and the fight against crime and drugs.  As a Member of Provincial Parliament, George represented the riding of Toronto Centre for over ten years. During that time he spearheaded a number of local initiatives, which ranged from support for new citywide transit improvements and major capital projects, to the development of a new community skating program and a reading club for children and youth in Regent Park.  As Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and Deputy Premier, George led the largest expansion of Community Health Centres in the province’s history, helped provide over half a million Ontarians with access to a family doctor, and improved wait times for key services.  As Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, George championed the Green Energy and Green Economy Act, making Ontario a North American leader in renewable energy policy and creating opportunity for more than 50,000 new green energy jobs.  George has been a long-time advisor to government leaders in all three levels of government including serving as chief of staff to former Toronto mayor, Barbara Hall.  He also has significant private sector experience, having been a small business owner and operator for years before first seeking elected office.  George knows first-hand the challenges that businesses face to thrive and grow in the City of Toronto.   Born and raised in Etobicoke, George has made downtown Toronto his home for more than twenty years.   He is married to Christopher Peloso.
